Experience the daily life of a riverside community, a unit of sustainable use in the Amazon, near Alter do Chão, in the Tapajós region, almost on the border of the states of Amazonas and Pará, where the Arapiuns rivers, Tapajós and Amazon.
Saúde&Alegria is a non-profit organization based in Santarém in the Amazonas region. The team of the project concentrates on promoting topics such as health, education, culture and climate protection. It is their vision to improve political processes, living conditions and civilian rights in an overall context of developing integrated and sustainable communities. Including members from all levels of society in decision-making processes is an integral part of the team's efforts.
The impact of climate change in the Amazon
The organization reaches nearly 30,000 people who are scattered among remote villages and streams in the Amazon. In the region, people have little choice but to sustain their livelihoods through a range of activities including hunting, fishing, timber production and cultivation. Mass deforestation severely threatens self-sufficiency which causes the destruction of people's subsistence: the forest. Local habitants bear the brunt of climate change and feel the adverse impact of deforestation in their daily lives. Long periods of drought drain vital streams in the Amazon basin. Sometimes the rainfall becomes so intense that floods have reportedly washed away farmland and houses.
The project also operates in the Amazon in order to promote and support participatory processes for integrated and sustainable community development, contributing to demonstrative way in the improvement of public policies, quality of life and citizenship. It started in 1987 with 16 pilot communities of rural area of Santarém - Pará state. Since 2000, it began the gradual expansion of its coverage area. Currently operates directly in over three municipalities in western Pará - Belterra, Aveiro and Juruti - serving around 30,000 people, mostly traditional populations, many of them at risk and vulnerability.
It is important to join forces to make possible inclusion of these populations, either in the facilitation of access to public services such as the participatory construction of solutions that bring tangible benefits and to establish themselves as insusceptible environmental technologies to gain scale and replication, even in other contexts.
It has an interdisciplinary technical team, who regularly visits the communities to implement programs for land use planning, land and environment; social organization, citizenship and human rights; family production and income generation; health and sanitation; education, culture, communication and digital inclusion.
The art, fun and communication are the main instruments of education and mobilization. Through open methods of multilateral construction of knowledge, adapted to local cultural universe, we seek to involve all segments and age groups, describing them as multipliers - leaders, farmers, local entrepreneurs, teachers, health workers, groups women, youth and children.
Participatory diagnostics facilitate the continued monitoring of the results by the residents and the joint planning of actions, providing the tools to support people in managing their development.
In recent years, the economies of scale, the solutions found, the good results, the broad framework of alliances, mobilizing, credibility and visibility obtained consolidated the role of this project in the region as a sponsor institution of sustainable development programs.
As a result, the project has been demanded increasingly to assist public, private, NGOs and social movements in the dissemination of their experience, which provides opportunities and creates favorable conditions for a new job step to expand its social transformation capacity in all aspects.
The Project helps communities tackle their most pressing needs by developing
simple solutions together.
